Residencies For Artists In 2021

Artists and creatives are part of the driving force in our society, but we can't forget that as an artist, you need time to create. The best way for you to continue to produce great work is by having uninterrupted blocks of time away from your regular life. This type of mental space allows them to push boundaries and explore uncharted territory. That's why I'm excited about exploring with you international residencies for artists in 2021!

Before we get into the exciting part of showcasing some of the incredible artistic opportunities around the world, let’s first understand what residencies are and the benefits they offer.

What are art residencies?

According to Abundant Artist, “Artist residencies are dedicated places around the world that offer time and space away from your usual distractions. It’s really a place to nurture your process and discover new ways of working.” When searching for residencies, decide the purpose of it (i.e. why you want to do it), how much time and money you have to and can spend, where you want to go, and on which projects you’ll be working. This preplanning stage can help make your search a whole lot easier and more enjoyable.

Benefits of artist residencies

Artist residencies are great opportunities for finding inspiration in fresh perspectives and environments.
Artist Amy Clay who has participated in 20 residencies in 14 different countries across the globe - including Iceland, New Zealand, India and Turkey explains that “[her] paintings have changed in so many ways because of my exposure to so many different worlds. Artist residencies offer the chance to connect with other artists from around the world in different disciplines—I love that I feel part of a huge global network of artists!”

Now it’s time to discover the amazing opportunities out there for artists just like you. We’ve compiled a list according to the continent that you can browse through to potentially find your next getaway and artistic retreat.

All the information is taken from the websites of each residency as well as key sites that you can take note of for finding even more residency opportunities: Res Artis and TransArtist. These two organizations vet, promote, and support artist residency centres around the world and will help you stay abreast of the programs available worldwide.
